UK Bagua

Do I have to know martial arts to take part?

No, this style of Bagua does not require any knowledge of any martial arts.  Martial artists, especially those practicing Chinese arts will see a connections to their art, however this approach to Bagua is more concerned with health and opening the body and mind.

Monastic Bagua is for meditation and spiritual practices, therefore those already meditating or practicing arts such as Yoga or have Mindfullness practices will find this complementary to their existing practices and those new to these type of arts will find this a good introduction to subjects of vast depth and breadth.

Are martial arts techniques taught?

If there are enough people interested in martial arts, then martial content will be referenced and the ideas behind applications shown, however this will not always be the case since the main focus is on building a strong, healthy but relaxed body and mind.

What is Taoism/Daoism?

Taoism is a naturalistic science which originated in China.  It was based on the observation of nature and natural phenomena.  This included Astronomy, Cosmology, Mathematics and energy arts, such as Bagua and Qigong.  Much later in its development, a branch of religious practice formed, however the religious aspects are not a part of Bagua and are not practiced or referred to in UK Bagua seminars.

Will Taoism be taught in the seminars?

Naturalistic (non religious) Taoism will be referenced throughout all seminars.  Concepts of Yin and Yang, "Letting Go" and Longevity Breathing will be mentioned in regards to practice.

I have a medical issue, can I still attend classes?

It is always advised that you speak to your GP or a qualified medical practitioner before undertaking a new exercise program.  Bagua is designed to open the body's cavities, increase blood and lymph flow and can also put some pressure through the joints of the knees and lower back.  Movements can be modified to put less pressure through injured joints, however, it is always recommended that you speak to your medical practitioner before attending a seminar regarding your capability to attend and practice thereafter.

I already practice Bagua, what will be the difference between the styles?

Most styles of Bagua are martial arts based.  The Monastic Water Method is not martial orientated and as such is focused on using the body as a vehicle (through the correct alignment of tendons, ligaments and bones in order to create openess and internal connection throughout the body) for energetic practices and meditation.

If you already practice Bagua Zhang as a martial art you will find the emphasis we place on internal alignment and Qi energetics useful in your own practice.  We practice slowly and thoroughly, with great attention paid to detail.
