UK Bagua

Course Content

  • First students must learn to stand in postures correctly with correct internal and external alignment before learning Bagua footwork.
  • Straight line walking with correct posture and relaxed intent
  • Circle Walking. The aim is to walk whilst keeping the nervous system calm, and body connected.
  • Next, Static Arm Postures are introduced into circle walking whilst keeping the body correctly aligned, open, relaxed and connected.
  • Lastly Palm Changes are introduced, which take further the work already started in the Static Arm Postures: Lengthening, Twisting and Spiralling.

After students have gained proficiency in walking the circle, (whilst maintaining correct relaxed Static Arm Postures and having learnt the Single Palm Change: the foundation of all the Palm Changes) two person exercises may be introduced as a way of reaching deeper into ones practice and to introduce more external challenges whilst maintaining relaxation and stillness of the nervous system.

Example of a one day seminar

  • An introduction to the first two static postures
    • The static postures introduce practitioners to opening the body from tip to toe. Each posture has a specific physical purpose and energetic purpose. Postures 1 and 2 will be taught.
    • Posture 1 focuses on opening the body to create power and balance throughout. It creates strong Qi and has an expansive energy.
    • Posture 2 teaches twisting, wrapping and condensing of the body and it's Qi, Qi is condensed inwards to activate the Tantien. This posture is good for people who are feeling weak and would like to bring Qi into their body, it is an 'absorbing' posture

  • Straight line mud-step walking
    • We will examine the 'three part step'. Participants will learn how to engage the spine to initiate walking and retain an internal connection from the toes through the spine into the top of the head. This connection is a continuous theme in Bagua and an essential first link to internal awareness.

  • Circling of arms to to generate qi to warm the body and cool the body down at the beginning and end of practice
    • Circling of the arms can serve to move Qi around the body in a gentle loose manner when cooling the body down or if feeling a bit weak in practice and can be used to strongly move and pulse energy around the body in preparation for walking and static postures and Palm Changes at the beginning of practice
